Villa Giorgos is a comfortable, peaceful and private retreat on the forested outskirts of the charming traditional village of Gavalohori. The villa has dramatic views of Souda Bay, Aptera Fort, The Akrotiri Peninsula, acres of olive and cypress trees, and the spectacular White Mountains. All of the villa’s bedrooms and living areas lead out to balconies and terraces to enjoy these views. Hidden away on a hillside at the end of a short private track above a ravine, and surrounded on 3 sides by a forest of tall cypress trees, Villa Giorgos is very secluded and yet only 4 minutes away by car from the pretty coastal village of Almyrida with its sandy beaches and many amenities.
Completed in the Spring of 2008, this buttermilk coloured villa is modern, comfortably furnished and well equipped with everything needed for a relaxing vacation including satellite TV, DVD and CD players, ceramic hob and built in oven, fridge, freezer, microwave oven, washing machine, barbeque, and air conditioning units in the bedrooms and living room. The a/c units also double up as heaters, and there is central heating for the cooler nights early and late season, as well as solar powered hot water with a back-up immersion heater. The tincredibly hospitable and friendly Greek owners, Giorgos and Spiridoula, have supplied large pool/beach towels so that you will not have to take up precious room in your suitcase by bringing these with you. The villa has many typically Cretan touches such as local cypress wood for the interior staircase, the doors, the tilt and turn windows which provide a constant through breeze, the shutters, and the pergolas on the pool terrace and the outside dining terrace. The bedroom furniture, including the built-in wardrobes and vanity units, and the kitchen cabinets have also been made from this matching warm wood. The bedroom floor tiles also look like a matching wood. Natural local stone has been used in abundance for all of the walls, steps, stone paving, and raised flowerbeds on this lovely terraced property which includes a spacious private parking area.
The swimming pool is set on its own terrace set above and behind the villa. Surrounded by a low stone wall and tall trees, including cypress, olive and carob, the pool area is very private and peaceful where the only sounds you are likely to hear are the birds singing or the tinkling of bells from nearby sheep. There are 2 pergolas on different levels near the pool and barbeque that provide shade and are equipped with a dining table and chairs, a swing chair with a canopy as well as sun-beds. Bordering the pool terrace and all around the villa itself, there are many raised flowerbeds which are planted with an abundance of shrubs including magnolia trees, roses, margaritas, different coloured daisies, and hydrangea. The living room and bedrooms all lead out to balconies and terraces which have a choice of sun or shade and are equipped with tables, chairs and umbrellas (on the upstairs terraces) so that you may relax with a meal or a drink whilst taking in the glorious views down the valley to the sea.
Villa Giorgos has a unique countrified location with no immediate neighbours – just 1 semi occupied holiday villa a few hundred metres away on the on the far side of a ravine. It should therefore appeal to the escapists amongst you who value comfort and seclusion, whilst being just minutes from beaches, tavernas and shops.

Gavalohori is a very traditional village and it has great historical importance in this area. There are buildings still remaining from Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish eras, and artefacts have also been found in the area from Neolithic and Minoan Times. Many of these artefacts are now housed in the Historical and Folklore Museum which is located on one of the village’s narrow streets. On the outskirts of the village there is a lovely picnic area beneath a thicket of shady trees and next to some Venetian Wells. The village square is only a short drive or 15 – 20 minute walk from Villa Giorgos, and is still very much the focal point of village life.
The main kafenion/taverna is a beautifully renovated stone building which is run by the very friendly Monica Papatheofilo. The food and desserts here are delicious and the prices are low. Sitting under the kafenion’s shady mulberry trees and watching the world go by, is a favourite past time for both locals and visitors alike. On the opposite side of the square there is the Women’s Craft Co-operative which is trying to keep traditional handicrafts alive by making and selling products such as pottery and lace. In the village you can also find 2 more tavernas, 2 mini markets, a café which has souvlaki and barbequed food, and a bakery. Villa Giorgos is just 5 minutes by car to the lovely village of Almyrida which is built around a crescent shaped sandy beach. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are many excellent tavernas, cafes and shops, and Villas Crete Holidays for tourist information and guided tours. Also in Almyrida there is a scuba diving centre, and water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 45 minutes away by car.
