Many families and couples return again and again to this lovely villa (or its neighbour Villa Erofili) that is surrounded by acres of silver and green olive groves with gorgeous views of The White Mountains, and set just on the outskirts of the beautiful hamlet of Armeni which is famous for its orange groves, and fresh water springs. Villa Aretousa has a wonderful rural location yet is only 2.7km from the National Highway, which makes it an ideal starting point from which to explore the many and varied sites that Crete has to offer. The villa is also only a short distance from the shops and excellent tavernas in Armeni, as well as the many amenities and sandy beaches of Kalives.

Villa Aretousa has been lovingly designed and built by its owner, Giorgos, who is the epitome of Greek hospitality, whilst allowing his guests total privacy. Giorgos always gives gifts of his homemade raki and wine, as well as his superb olive oil which has been made from the trees that surround the villas. The villa has been built incorporating traditional designs and materials with modern high standards and comforts. Local stone has been used for the walls around the property, the paving around the pool and villa, the fireplace, and the archway between the kitchen and living room. Local cypress wood has been used for the wonderful beamed ceilings throughout the villa, the mezzanine level (to which extra fold-out beds can be added for a small charge if necessary) and the pergolas. Painted a fresh pale yellow colour inside and out, Villa Aretousa has contrasting green aluminium doors, windows and shutters, and mosquito screens on all the windows. The attractive interior has a number of elements that help to keep the villa perfectly cool during the long hot summer days that Crete is famous for such as terracotta floor tiles, high vaulted ceilings, traditional dark wood furniture that has been hand carved at the workshop of a local craftsman, hand made lace curtains on the living area windows, and air conditioning units in all the bedrooms, and the kitchen/living area. The a/c units double up as heaters, and there is a fireplace for the cooler nights early and late season. There is solar powered hot water or a back-up immersion heater. The villa has been finished to a very high standard and includes many modern comforts such as satellite TV, a DVD player, a fully equipped modern kitchen, a washing machine, a BBQ, and beautifully tiled bathrooms. All of the exquisite lights were made at the glass blowing workshop in Kokkino Horio where you are welcome to visit and watch them work.

With such attractive surroundings and great weather, many of the guests at Villa Aretousa choose to spend most of their time relaxing out-doors. Giorgos has therefore supplied a good selection of outdoor furniture including dining tables, a coffee table, director’s chairs, sun-beds and umbrellas. With a choice of sun or shade on the completely private main covered front terrace, the semi covered roof terrace or around the pool, what more could anybody wish for. As if the acres of olive trees surrounding the villa were not enough, the garden has been planted with many different flowering shrubs including bougainvillea, hibiscus, hottentot fig ground cover, geraniums, roses, conifers, and a large expanse of yellow, white and purple daisies. Traditional Greek terracotta pots are also planted with flowers and scattered around the property. Privacy is generally excellent as a bamboo fence and olive trees provides screening between the two villas, though there are still areas that can be partially seen by the neighbouring villa.

Villa Aretousa and Villa Erofili are ideal for those seeking a high quality villa in a countrified setting, but within walking distance to a traditional sleepy Cretan village, and striking distance by car to the National Highway, many amenities, sandy beaches, craft workshops and archaeological sites.

This roof terrace is covered with a lattice roofed pergola and has a dining table and chairs.

Location

An easy 12 minute stroll along quiet back lanes brings you to the centre of the village of Armeni. Armeni has a very lush, green setting with tall plane trees lining the streets. Located in the middle of a verdant valley with bountiful springs and a river running through the centre, Armeni is a quiet Cretan village where most of the occupants rely on farming the surrounding olive and orange groves to make a living. The focal point of the village is the typical kafenion which sits under the shade of a large chestnut tree. There are 4 excellent tavernas, a good butcher shop, a well stocked mini market, and a number of cafés and souvlaki shops. One of the tavernas hosts regular “Cretan Nights” throughout the season, with live music and fun Cretan dancers, but be warned – you are expected to join in the festivities! For a complete change of pace, another taverna is surrounded by an expansive lawn with the tables set on the river bank. There is a babysitter on the premises and a huge array of children’s toys so that visiting parents can have a break and eat a quiet romantic meal if they wish.

Leisurely canoe trips that head up the river can be taken from here during low season. Nearby Kalives has long been a popular destination for holiday makers seeking a typically Greek seaside resort that has many amenities but is far removed from brash tourism. Kalives stretches along 4 kilometres of sandy beaches, and the narrow main street is lined with old white washed houses. Two rivers run join the sea at Kalives, and there is a traditional fishing boat harbour at the eastern end of the village. There is an abundance of excellent tavernas and cafes lining the seafront, and there are shops of every description. The village is also the home of a number of talented artists, and the only traditional barrel maker who is left in the area (a great place to go for a wine tasting visit). Five kilometres away in Almyrida, there is a scuba diving centre, awater sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans, and Villas Crete Holidays for tourist information and excursions. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 25 minutes away by car.
