Villa Iremia perfectly lives up to its name which means “calm” in Greek. This beautifully constructed villa enjoys a very relaxing setting on the outskirts of the pretty village of Gavalohori, and tucked away on a dirt track that only gives access to a few quality villas.  The property is laid out over 3 levels of a terraced hillside, high above the quaint village churches and traditional houses in the centre of the village. Villa Iremia therefore has outstanding views over Gavalohori to the azure waters of Souda Bay, the spectacular White Mountains, Aptera Fort, The Akrotiri Peninsula, and acres of silver/ green olives and conifers in the valley below. This property is ideal for anyone who would like a seemingly rural location that is within walking distance of tavernas, cafes, mini markets and a bakery in a friendly traditional village that is only 5 minutes easy drive from the sandy beaches and many amenities in the small but bustling seaside resort of Almyrida.

The owner has created an attractive escape which combines traditional Cretan features with modern comforts. The villa has been built using cypress wood for the doors, shutters, and the high vaulted ceiling in the living room, and the kitchen cabinets, the beds, and the built-in wardrobes have been chosen to match perfectly. Local stone has been used for the garden walls, sections of the villa’s exterior walls, the fireplace and chimney.  This stone is white in colour when it first comes out of the ground, and then turns to a darker colour, leading the locals to say that it “tans”.  Décor throughout is tasteful and relaxing with comfortable furnishings and excellent facilities that are carefully thought through. Every modern comfort for has been provided for at Villa Iremia,  such as free unlimited WIFI, a smart TV, ceramic hob and built in oven, fridge, freezer, microwave oven, dishwasher, washing machine, barbeque, and air conditioning units in the bedrooms, kitchen and living room. The A/C units also double up as heaters, and there is central heating and a fireplace for the cooler nights early and late season (though fuel is not included in the rental price). There are 2 fully tiled bathrooms complete with bidets, and whilst one is an en-suite shower room the other is a beautiful and very large family bathroom with a full-size corner bath with a shower attachment. There is solar powered hot water with a back-up immersion heater, and a gated car port set just off the track on the top terrace of the property.

The clever design of the villa means that there is a light and airy feeling throughout, and the living room and bedrooms (as well as the upstairs dining terrace and pool terrace) all enjoy the beautiful panoramic views.  The spacious living room and the well equipped kitchen share prime position on the top floor of the villa, whilst the 2 bedrooms are on the ground floor which keeps them naturally cooler during the long summer. The pool terrace can be reached via a few steps from the balcony/terrace immediately outside the bedrooms, or via a flight of steps down the side of the villa from the top floor. There is plenty of space to spread out and unwind on the stone paved pool terrace which is blessed with south and west facing aspects and is bathed with sun for much of the year. The good sized pool has a Roman end with steps leading gently into it that are perfect for less confident swimmers and less able family members, but even strong swimmers won’t be able to resist sitting on them and lazing around in the cooling water on a hot summer’s day.

More than ample outside furniture is available at Villa Iremia. Sun-beds and umbrellas, a couch, arm chairs and a coffee table, a 2nd coffee table and chairs and a choice of al-fresco dining areas (one with a barbeque on the upstairs terrace, and one on the downstairs pool terrace), have been placed around the property giving a choice of sun or welcome shade at all times of the day.  The grounds (and the hillside on the left side of the villa) are home to an impressive variety of typically Mediterranean flowers, shrubs, and trees which provide colour, some natural shade, and even a sense of privacy on the upper terraces despite there being an occasionally used holiday home on the plot to the right of the villa. In addition to affording our guests with abundant opportunities to relax completely, Villa Iremia is ideally located for those who like to explore and/or exercise. With many walking trails leading from Gavalohori, and a range of water sports and activities available in Almyrida, even the most energetic individual will be completely satisfied.

A perfect blend of both modern and traditional, with fantastic views and a good value price, within walking distance of excellent local tavernas, and a short distance from one of the prettiest stretches of coastline on Crete, Villa Iremia is ideal for couples and small families and is sure to book up early when the word gets out.

Villa Location

Gavalohori is a very traditional village and it has great historical importance in this area. There are buildings still remaining from Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish eras, and artefacts have also been found in the area from Neolithic and Minoan Times. Many of these artefacts are now housed in the Historical and Folklore Museum which is located on one of the village’s narrow streets. On the outskirts of the village there is a lovely picnic area beneath a thicket of shady trees and next to some Venetian Wells. The village square is only 650m from Villa Iremia and is still very much the focal point of village life. The main kafenion/taverna is a beautifully renovated stone building which is run by the very friendly Monica Papatheofilo. The food and desserts here are delicious and the prices are very reasonable. Sitting under the kafenion’s shady mulberry trees and watching the world go by, is a favourite past time for both locals and visitors alike. On the opposite side of the square there is lovely gift shop which sells local Cretan products. In the village you can also find 1 more taverna/kafenion, a very good mini market, a hairdresser, and a bakery. Villa Iremia is just 5 minutes by car to the lovely village of Almyrida which is built around a crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 12 tavernas 2 pizzeria/pasta restaurants, 6 cafes, 1 bar,  7 gift shops, 3 mini markets, 1 jewellery shop, 2 ladies clothes shops, 1 fruit and vegetable shop with a deli counter, 1 Italian ice cream shop, 3 bakeries/coffee shops, 1 off license, 1 pharmacy, 4 real estate offices, 1 nail spa, a hair dresser, and 1 kiosk.   Also in Almyrida there is a scuba diving office, pedalo and paddle board rentals, and a water sports centre that rents out windsurfers, catamarans, kayaks, and bicycles. We, at Villas Crete Holidays will give you the contact details for private boat hire, private boat trips, private sight-seeing flights, horse riding, , big game fishing, guided walking, and guided coach excursions.A few minutes by car from the villa, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 35 – 40 minutes away by car.
