Villa Kalypso is a modern villa that is located on the side of a hill just above the seaside village of Almyrida, which affords it gorgeous views of the sea and the surrounding olive and vine clad hills. Villa Kalypso is set just below the adjacent villa (Villa Ifigenia - which we also book) and has its own grounds, pool, table tennis table, BBQ, and private parking area. The villa belongs to a friendly local family who have a quaint gift shop in Almyrida, and whose sister owns the popular “Thalami” seafood taverna in the village.
The villa has been thoughtfully designed to ensure that all rooms have balconies or terraces that take in the outstanding views. Both floors of the house have huge sea facing terraces where one can sit and watch the ferries going to and from Athens, or the lights twinkling at night from the Akrotiri Peninsula on the opposite side of Souda Bay. The lower terrace is covered, and the upper terrace is open, so that you can choose either sun or shade. The villa is a peach colour with dark green aluminium doors, windows and shutters throughout. The furniture, doors and cupboards throughout the inside of the villa are traditionally Cretan, and made locally from a honey coloured wood. The upstairs rooms have incorporated the lovely high wood beamed ceilings that are also very traditional. All modern comforts have been provided for at Villa Kalypso, including a sumptuous suedette couch, free unlimited WIFI internet access, satellite TV, DVD and CD players, dishwasher and washing machine, and air conditioning units in all of the bedrooms and the living room. The A/C units also double up as heaters for the cooler nights at the start and end of the season. The water is heated by either solar panel or a back-up immersion heater.
There are natural stone walls running all around the property, which despite its close proximity to the village feels very rural. Villa Kalypso and its separate pool terrace have olive groves, almond trees, a wild cherry tree, and a vineyard on 3 sides. The raised pool terrace is surrounded by grass and olive trees, as well as a low stone wall and wooden railings to ensure the safety of the younger members of the family, whilst not spoiling the beautiful views. Just below the villa and the pool are the lower garden, the BBQ, and a covered area that houses a table tennis table that is perfect the more active guests. The olive trees in the shady lower garden are perfect for relaxing under with a book on a hot summer’s day, whilst the children enjoy playing on the wooden see-saw and slide. The large sea facing terraces and the pool area have been well equipped with a large variety of comfortable outdoor furniture including dining tables, a coffee table, director’s chairs, sun-beds and umbrellas. The private, gated parking area has a wonderful flowerbed of sunflowers that are at least 2 metres tall.
You may not feel like leaving this lovely villa, but if you do decide to go to the beach, or have a delicious meal in one of the village’s four exceptional tavernas, you can easily walk downhill to the centre of Almyrida in approximately 8-10 minutes. It is a little harder coming uphill on the second half of the way back, but you will be so relaxed from the wine at dinner that you may not even notice!
